Day 3
Nicole Tautges, PhD, Agroecologist from Michael Fields Agricultural Institute presented students information on soil and plant health. Soil dug from two areas at the park were compared in addition to testing the soil for nitrogen and phosphorus. Nicole also discussed the different types of plants and the importance of diversification and components of healthy soil. Lastly, students planted pots with seeds for the “three sisters” corn, beans and squash.
Students were able to look at soil with the microscopes shared with the Edgerton Public Library.
Students also learned about composting including the importance of “browns”, “greens”, water, and stirring to increase oxygen level. Compost greens were collected from home and brought to the Silverwood compost bins.
As Silverwood Park was waiting for the installation of irrigation systems, students needed to haul water to nourish their plants.
